Version Vector

The Version Vector is the internal version string Microsoft Internet Explorer keeps in the Windows Registry. It differs from the User Agent string, which is the string browsers send to web servers when they request a page. The Version Vector is used in comparisons using Conditonal Comments (an MSIE only addon).

It is because of the Version Vector that multiple IE installs usually claim to be IE6. The browser actually claims it's own version in the Help > About section from the Version Vector. Also, the difference between the Version Vector and the User Agent string is why IE7 Beta 2 claims to be IE7 in User Agent checks, but doesn't accept the conditional comment [if IE 7.0] .
