There are a number of tools that can help you to explore existing stylesheets.

  • Firebug (a Firefox extension) has the best CSS explorer by far - it lets you select an element and instantly see what rules are being applied to it, also toggle those rules on and off (or even add new ones) to try out changes.
  • Web Development Bookmarklets by Jesse Ruderman. ancestors, edit styles and test styles are particularly useful.
  • Mouse Over DOM Inspector by Steve Chipman is another killer bookmarklet.
  • Mozilla and Firefox both have DOM Inspector tools.
  • Xyle scope is a powerful CSS and DOM browser for the Mac, based on Safari.
  • NVU by Daniel Glazman promises to help with traceability.
